Ever feel like you just can’t understand what the Bible says or what it means? Try reading a modern translation such as the CSB or NLT. Each translation tries to balance staying true to the original meaning with being readable in today’s English vernacular. We find the CSB to balance these well. The NLT is even easier to read but loses some of the power and depth of meaning found in the CSB.

Whatever translation you chose, the important part is to get in the Bible every day. Before reading ask God to help you to understand what you read. Then sit back, read the daily reading in your Bible or using the links below, and trust God to teach you something about His love for you. Consider asking yourself the following questions:

What does this passage teach me about God?
What does this passage teach me about mankind and/or myself?
What do I need to do as a result of these?
Who can I share what I learned with?

Fish Stories

My family did a lot of fishing when I was growing up. One summer, when we were camping, my dad came and woke my brother and I up to go fishing, before sunrise. As a teenager, I wanted to sleep. Dad let me but told me I probably wouldn't catch anything. When I woke up at noon (not good fishing time), I went down to the banks of the lake where my cousins were swimming, walked up the shore a little bit, and cast out my trusty jitterbug. On my second cast, I hooked something. I yelled that I caught something and for someone to bring down a net. No one believed me – after all it wasn't fishing time, at least not for anything very big. While I worked to reel it in, my granddad finally realized it wasn't a fish tale, I actually had something on the line. So he came down with a net. I had caught a small mouth bass just a quarter inch off the state record!

When I tell this story, it still sounds a little unbelievable – you just don't catch fish like that in the middle of the day. I wonder if that is why Jesus asked the three disciples He took with Him to the mountain top to not talk to people about the transfiguration until He raised from the dead. After all, who was going to believe that they had seen Moses and Elijah, in person?
