How to Get in Shape Spiritually this Year
January 6, 2025
Just as many people focus on physical fitness at the start of the new year, there are other ways you can become fit, as well. In particular, at the start of the new year, we should also prioritize our spiritual fitness. In order to grow as people we need to exercise our faith daily. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” Like any muscle, our faith grows stronger when we exercise it through prayer, worship, and trusting God in challenging situations. Choose to get in shape spiritually this year.
How to Grow Spiritually
Here are four ways you can get in shape spiritually this year.
Read the Bible Daily. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Just as we need daily physical sustenance, we need to feed on God’s Word consistently. Setting aside dedicated time for Bible reading and study helps us grow in knowledge and wisdom every day. To be part of a Bible reading plan today, you can go here or text “Bible” to 703-454-5990.
Pray. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 it encourages us to “pray continually.” Prayer keeps our connection with God strong and healthy, allowing His love and guidance to flow through our lives. Starting each day with prayer sets the tone for continuous communion with God.
Grow in Community. When we are part of a community of people that encourages you in your faith, it provides spiritual support and accountability. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” and not give up meeting together. Like having a workout partner, fellow believers can encourage us to stay committed to our spiritual growth.
Rest. Just as we need rest when you lift weights, we also need regular spiritual rest. Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Take time throughout the day for quiet reflection and worship rejuvenates our spirits.
Challenge
As you begin this new year, get in shape spiritually. Commit to strengthening your spiritual life. Set specific goals for Bible reading, prayer time, and fellowship with other believers. Remember, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). It is important to remember that spiritual fitness is a journey, not a destination. As Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us, we need to consistently press on toward the goal. Don’t get discouraged by temporary setbacks; instead, keep pushing forward in your relationship with God.
