How to Hear and Obey God When Reading the Bible

Reading the Bible

At New Life we talk about how you can listen to and follow the voice of God. One of those ways is by reading the Bible. However, in our very busy and distraction-filled world, hearing God’s voice can seem challenging. Yet, the Bible assures us that God still speaks to us today, primarily through His written Word.

When Reading the Bible

Here’s how we can better listen and follow God’s guidance for your life through reading the Bible.

reading the BibleEstablish a Regular Reading Habit. Consistency is key. Set aside time each day to read the Bible. Whether it’s early morning, during lunch, or before bed, find a time that works for you. As Psalm 1:2 says, the blessed person delights in God’s law and meditates on it day and night.

Pray Before You Read. Each time you read the Bible, begin your time with prayer. Ask God to open your heart and mind to His message. The Psalmist prayed, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Psalm 119:18). This attitude of receptivity prepares you to hear God’s voice as you read.

Take Your Time. As you are reading, take time to reflect on what you’re actually reading. Ask questions like, “What does this passage tell me about God?” and “How can I apply this to my life?” The more we can spend time reading the passage we are reading, the more opportunity we have to think about the passage and hear God’s leading.

Use Study Tools. Utilize Bible commentaries, concordances, and study guides to deepen your understanding. These can provide historical context and insights that enrich your reading.

Memorize Bible Verses. Commit key verses to memory. This allows God’s word to sink deep into your heart and mind, available for the Holy Spirit to bring to remembrance when needed. As Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Be Patient and Persistent. We live in an immediate gratification world. However, sometimes, understanding comes gradually. A passage’s significance might not be immediately apparent. However, trust that God’s word “does not return to him empty, but accomplishes what he desires” (Isaiah 55:11) and patiently and persistently keep seeking to hear God’s leading.

Conclusion

Listening to God through scripture is not about perfection, but persistence. It’s a lifelong journey of growing closer to God, allowing His word to shape our thoughts, actions, and very lives. Continue to faithfully engage with the habit of reading the Bible daily so that you can position yourself to hear God’s voice and follow His guidance more clearly.
