The Faith of the Canaanite Woman

She had every reason to give up.

She was a Canaanite — a Gentile, an outsider, someone the religious culture of her day would have placed firmly on the wrong side of the door. In Matthew 25, we see that she came to Jesus crying out for her daughter, who was tormented by a demon, and at first He didn’t answer her at all. In fact, His disciples asked Him to send her away. And when He finally spoke, His words were not the warm welcome she might have hoped for: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24, CSB).

She knelt before Him anyway.

“Lord, help me,” she said (Matthew 15:25, CSB). Three words. No argument, no ultimatum, no threat to walk away. Just a mother on her knees.

Then came the hardest moment. Jesus told her it wasn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to dogs. It was a test of faith — perhaps the sharpest one recorded in the Gospels. And she didn’t flinch. “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table” (Matthew 15:27, CSB).

She wasn’t asking for the whole loaf. She just knew that even the smallest fragment of His mercy was more than enough.

Jesus marveled. “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you wish” (Matthew 15:28, CSB). And her daughter was healed that very hour.

Persistent Prayers

This woman teaches us something about our prayers that we often forget: persistence is not the same as pestering God. It is the posture of someone who is utterly convinced that Jesus is worth not giving up on. She didn’t demand. She didn’t despair. She stayed. 

Jesus heard her and hears our prayers, too. Whatever you are believing God for today — healing, restoration, a breakthrough that hasn’t come — take your place at the table. The crumbs of His mercy are still more than enough.
