How was Baptism Taught and Practice in the Bible

Acts 2—The First Day of the Church

Acts 2:37 ESV – Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Acts 2:38 ESV –  And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:40-41 ESV – And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Acts 8—The Ethiopian Government Official

Acts 2:32-33 says… Now the Scripture passage he was reading was this:

He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb is silent before its shearer,
so he does not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation justice was denied him.
Who will describe his generation?
For his life is taken from the earth.

Acts 8:35 CSB – Philip proceeded to tell him the good news about Jesus, beginning with that Scripture.

Acts 8:36 CSB – As they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, “Look, there’s water. What would keep me from being baptized?”

Acts 8:38-39 CSB – So he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him any longer but went on his way rejoicing.

2 Corinthians 6:2 CSB – For he says: At an acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation!

Romans 6:3-4 CSB – are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 CSB – For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast.

1 John 5:3 CSB – For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden….

Baptism is God’s Gift for Us

Baptism Provides a Reasonable Test of our Faith

Genesis 22:2 CSB – “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering

Joshua 3:13 CSB – When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the Lord…come to rest in the Jordan’s water, its water will be cut off. The water flowing downstream will stand up in a mass.”

Mark 16:16 CSB – Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

“Only those who believe obey” is what we say to that part of a believer’s soul which obeys, and “only those who obey believe” is what we say to that part of the soul of the obedient which believes. If the first half of the proposition stands alone, the believer is exposed to the danger of cheap grace, which is another word for damnation. If the second half stands alone, the believer is exposed to the danger of salvation through works, which is also another word for damnation.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer in The Cost of Discipleship

1 John 5:3 CSB – For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden….

Baptism Provides a Much-Needed Expression of Cleansing

Acts 22:16 CSB – And now, why are you delaying? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’

1 Peter 3:21 CSB – Baptism…now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Isaiah 1:18 CSB –

“Though your sins are scarlet,
they will be as white as snow;
though they are crimson red,
they will be like wool.

Galatians 6:14 CSB –  But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Baptism Provides a Needed Benchmark for a New Life

Romans 6:3-4 CSB – …are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.

Romans 6:1-4 CSB – What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life

Galatians 3:27 CSB – For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ.

Romans 6:4 CSB – we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life

1 John 5:3 CSB – For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden….
