Who do you say Jesus is?

Jesus, The Humble Sovereign

Palm Sunday: The Triumphal Entry

Luke 19:28-31 CSB – When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples 30 and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’”

John 11:8 CSB – “Rabbi,” the disciples told him, “just now the Jews tried to stone you, and you’re going there again?

Zechariah 9:9 CSB – Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Luke 19:30 CSB – Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.

Luke 19:32-35 CSB – So those who were sent left and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 “The Lord needs it,” they said. 35 Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their clothes on the colt, they helped Jesus get on it.

Luke 19:36-38 CSB – As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road. 37 Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:

38 Blessed is the King who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Peace in heaven
and glory in the highest heaven!

Luke 4:8 CSB – “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. ”

Luke 19:39 CSB – Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”

Luke 19:40 CSB – He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”

John 5:18 CSB – This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him: Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

Romans 10:9 CSB – If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

God comes to people as a humble King

1 Kings 19:11-12 CSB – Then he said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord’s presence.” At that moment, the Lord passed by.

A great and mighty wind was tearing at the mountains and was shattering cliffs before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.

After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

12 After the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.

Matthew 11:28 CSB – “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:29 CSB – Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 12:20 CSB – He will not break a bruised reed, and he will not put out a smoldering wick, until he has led justice to victory.

Isaiah 40:11 CSB –

He protects his flock like a shepherd;
he gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them in the fold of his garment.
He gently leads those that are nursing.

Jesus, The Weeping Savior

Luke 19:41-42 CSB – As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it, 42 saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

Jesus weeps as He sees trouble ahead for the lost

Luke 19:43-44 CSB – For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. 44 They will crush you and your children among you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in your midst, because you did not recognize the time when God visited you.”

John 1:11 CSB – He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

John 3:19 CSB – This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

Isaiah 53:6 NIV –

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

1 John 3:1,3 CSB – See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are!

And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself just as he is pure.

Jesus, The Righteous Judge

First, can we point an arrow at the pinnacle of the temple?

Second, Can we make a yellow circle under Robinson’s arch area that’s in the dark, and then a circle around the southern steps and an arrow pointing to the double gate?

Luke 19:45-48 CSB – He went into the temple and began to throw out those who were selling, 46 and he said, “It is written, my house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!”  Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to kill him, 48 but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.

Romans 1:18 CSB – For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,

Romans 11:22 CSB – Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness toward you—if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

Amos 5:20-24 CSB –

Won’t the day of the Lord
be darkness rather than light,
even gloom without any brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise, your feasts!
I can’t stand the stench
of your solemn assemblies.
22 Even if you offer me
your burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them;
I will have no regard
for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice flow like water,
and righteousness, like an unfailing stream.

Romans 2:4-8 CSB – or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? Because of your hardened and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. He will repay each one according to his works:  7 eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality; but wrath and anger to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth while obeying unrighteousness.
