Build Your House

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24–25 (CSB)

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus didn’t say the storms might come. He said they WILL come. Rain, rising rivers, and pounding winds are not the exception in life — they are the guarantee. The only question He raises is this: what is your house built on?

The wise man and the foolish man in this parable both built houses. Both heard the same words of Jesus. The difference wasn’t intelligence or effort — it was foundation. One built on rock. One built on sand. And when the storm hit, only one house was left standing.

So how do we actually build on God? Here are a few practical ways to lay that foundation every day.

  • Start with His Word. Jesus says the wise builder is the one who hears His words and acts on them. Daily time in Scripture isn’t a religious habit — it’s laying one more stone on your foundation. Even ten minutes in the morning reading and reflecting plants something solid beneath your feet.
  • Pray before you plan. Building on God means inviting Him into decisions before you make them, not after things fall apart. Bring your plans, your fears, and your hopes to Him first. A house built on rock is one where God is consulted at the blueprint stage.
  • Surround yourself with community. No one builds alone. The local church, faithful friendships, and honest accountability are the framing walls that keep you upright when the wind hits. Isolation is sand; community is mortar.
  • Obey in the small things. Foundation work is slow and invisible. No one applauds you for daily faithfulness, quiet obedience, or choosing integrity when it costs you something. But God sees it — and that’s exactly where the rock is laid.

The storm is coming. Build your house on the rock now, while the ground is dry. It will help you survive and thrive during the storm that will come.
