Being Thankful in the Good and Tough Moments
November 18, 2024
In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” These are challenging words as they encourage us to find gratitude not just in our cherished, most encouraging memories, but also in our more difficult experiences. Being thankful in every moment, whether joyful or painful, shapes who we are and can draw us closer to God.
Biblical Examples of Being Thankful
The one person who really illustrates being thankful no matter the circumstance is Joseph in the Old Testament. After years of betrayal, imprisonment, and hardship, he was able to tell his brothers in Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” Through Joseph’s story, we see how God can weave even our painful memories into His greater purpose, creating a tapestry of growth and redemption.
In Psalm 77, Asaph encourages us to remember God’s faithfulness in all seasons: “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago” (Psalm 77:11). Our positive memories serve as monuments to God’s goodness, reminding us of His constant presence in times of celebration, achievement, and joy.
But what about those memories we’d rather forget? Paul reminds us in Romans 8:28 that “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Even our mistakes, failures, and painful experiences can become valuable lessons that shape our character and deepen our dependence on God. James encourages us in James 1:2-4 to “consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
Challenge
The reality is that God uses both our successes and failures to mold us into the image of Christ. Each memory becomes a stepping stone in our spiritual journey, teaching us patience, wisdom, and compassion for others facing similar struggles. That is why we should be encouraged to thank God for every memory and moment we experience. Whether they are joyful ones that make us smile and bring us joy or the challenging ones that have made us stronger, having the perspective of being thankful to God is always important. After all, as Philippians 1:6 assures us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Every experience, every memory, is part of His perfect plan for our growth and His glory.
