Building Easter Traditions That Last
March 16, 2026
Do you have any Easter traditions? They could be some you grew up with or some you have created for your own family. As you look at those traditions, the question is whether those traditions are simply fun — or whether they are also forming something. The best family traditions do both. They create memories and they build faith, and Easter is one of the best opportunities of the entire year to do exactly that.
Here are some ideas for building Easter traditions your family will carry for generations.
Read the Resurrection Story Every Year Together
Make it a non-negotiable. Every Easter morning before anything else happens, gather and read Luke 24:1-6 aloud — “He is not here, but he has risen!” Let those words be the first thing your family hears on Easter Sunday. Children who grow up hearing the same passage year after year will find it written on their hearts long after they leave your home.
Create an Easter Countdown
Starting on Palm Sunday, walk through one part of the Easter story each day. Use a simple paper chain or a candle for each day. Philippians 4:8 tells us to fix our minds on things that are true and worthy — and there is nothing more worthy of a week of focused attention than the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Serve Someone Every Easter Season
Build outward generosity into your Easter rhythm. Galatians 6:2 calls us to carry one another’s burdens. Choose one family, neighbor, or ministry to bless every year during Holy Week — a meal, a gift, a note of encouragement. When children grow up connecting Easter with giving, they learn that resurrection life is meant to flow outward.
Start a Resurrection Journal
Each Easter, have every family member write or draw one thing God did in their life that year that only He could have done. Over time this journal becomes a family altar — a tangible record of God’s faithfulness that you can return to year after year.
Traditions shape us quietly and consistently. Build ones worth keeping and invest in the spiritual formation of your family.
