Freedom Through Faith in Christ
February 19, 2024
In Romans 6-8, Paul paints a beautiful picture of the freedom we gain through faith in Christ. In Romans 6:16-18 he highlights that we are no longer enslaved to sin, but we become slaves to righteousness. And, by God’s mercy, the requirements of the law are fulfilled in us as we walk by the Spirit (Romans 8:3-4). It’s incredible, life transforming news!
But how do we tap into this new life? Paul outlines the process in Romans 6. First, we must recognize that our old self has been crucified with Christ so that we are no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:6). Being united with Jesus in his death and resurrection changes everything for us! Then, we must consider ourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11). This daily choice to identify with Christ’s finished work is the key to walking in freedom.
As Romans 6 finishes up, we are left with a powerful image. Just as slaves obey their master, we now make the conscious decision to obey the leadings of righteousness rather than that of sin. Before Jesus, our choices always ended in death. But now being made right with God as a gift, we can enjoy eternal life (Romans 6:22-23)!
The beauty is that none of this is based on our own effort or ability. After all, in Romans 7, Paul shares that we can still be held captive of sin. He shares powerfully and very transparently that he, himself, is still captive to sin. But through the Holy Spirit, we have the power to overcome that (Romans 8:9). When we feel too weak to follow and obey God, we can remember that Christ intercedes for us (Romans 8:34). His grace really is sufficient and we can rest and rely on it.
Conclusion
So what must you do to take hold of this new life? Reckon yourself dead to sin and surrender your life to God daily. Set your mind and heart on Christ and let Him empower you to walk in righteousness and holiness. Remember, you have died to sin, and now you can have freedom with God through faith in Jesus (Colossians 3:3). Do not let sin reign over you. Embrace your new identity found in Christ and live in that freedom daily.
