What kind of legacy will you leave behind when your time on earth is over? As we have been reading stories of faith from the minor and major prophets, we read about the spiritual mentorship and training Elijah had with Elisha. In 2 Kings 2, it became time for Elisha to take over and he was ready. Read the passage here and watch a video devotional about it to be encouraged.

As followers of Christ, we are called to live like Elijah and leave behind a legacy that points others to Christ. But how? Here are a few ways you can leave a legacy that points people to Christ and make an eternal impact.

Model Christlike Character

One of the most significant ways you can leave a lasting legacy is by exemplifying the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) in your daily life. When others see the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that comes from your life, it makes the Gospel message real and impactful. The way you interact with others on a daily basis speaks volumes.

Invest in Spiritual Multiplication

As you are on a journey of following Christ, take time to invest in others. Whether it is your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers or complete strangers, be intentional about mentoring and discipling those God has placed in your life. Pass on what you have learned about God to others who can then do the same with others. As Paul wrote Timothy, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2). Investing spiritually into others advances God’s Kingdom for generations to come.

Leave a Legacy of Prayer

Consistently pray for those in your sphere of influence, as well as generations to come. Pray for their faith, growth in godliness, life decisions, challenges, and open doors to share the Gospel. A legacy of prayer continues bearing fruit even after you’re gone. God moves through the prayers of His people in mighty ways – so persist in lifting up those you care about in prayer.

Finish the Race Well

Run the race of faith with endurance all the way up until you cross the finish line into heaven. It is so important to persevere in godliness and not lose heart despite struggles, trials, or seasons of weariness that may come your way. Your steadfastness glorifies God and encourages others to keep pressing on, as well.

The way you live your life each day, care for others, point people to Jesus, and walk in obedience plants seeds for an enduring legacy that glorifies God. May you leave a legacy that impacts generations to come.
