What We Can Learn from Philip about Living on Mission
June 2, 2025

In Acts 8 we are introduced to Philip. He was one of the seven deacons chosen to serve tables who becomes a powerful example of what it means to “live sent” and live on mission by God. His ministry offers great lessons for anyone seeking to share the gospel effectively.
Here are 5 lessons we can learn.
Follow the Spirit’s Leading
Philip’s journey from the thriving revival in Samaria to a desert road encounter with one Ethiopian shows us the importance of being open to the Holy Spirit’s moving. When an angel told him to leave a successful ministry for an uncertain mission, Philip obeyed immediately. Living sent means being willing to abandon our plans when God redirects our steps, trusting that His assignments—even the seemingly illogical ones—are always purposeful.
Break Down Barriers
Philip’s ministry crossed significant cultural boundaries. He preached to Samaritans, traditionally despised by Jews, and engaged an Ethiopian eunuch who would have been excluded from temple worship. His example challenges us to examine whether we’re limiting our evangelism to people who look, think, or live like us. The gospel is for everyone, regardless of race, culture, or background.
Meet People Where They Are
Rather than launching into a prepared sermon, Philip asked the Ethiopian, “Do you understand what you’re reading?” This question-based approach teaches us to start with people’s current interests and needs. Effective evangelism and sharing about God begins with listening, not talking. We must learn to build bridges from where people are to where God wants them to be.
Use Scripture as Your Foundation
Philip used the Ethiopian’s reading of Isaiah 53 to explain Jesus. He didn’t rely solely on personal testimony or emotional appeals but grounded his evangelism in God’s Word. This reminds us that Scripture, not our persuasive abilities, has the power to transform hearts.
Be Ready for Immediate Response
When the Ethiopian asked about baptism, Philip didn’t create unnecessary delays or barriers. He recognized genuine faith and acted immediately. Living sent means being prepared to help people take their next spiritual steps without hesitation.
Conclusion
Philip’s example shows us that living on mission isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being available, obedient, and ready to partner with God in His mission to reach the world. Take time today to go to God and prayerfully ask Him to lead you to who He wants you to share to and the words to say. Then, when God gives you that opportunity, step up and share. God willing, you may be able to have an experience like Philip did with the Ethiopian.
