What the Shepherds Teach Us About Christmas

shepherds

In Luke 2:1-20 we are introduce to the shepherds. These shepherds are often overlooked in comparison to the wise men. However, they offer some profound lessons about faith, hope, and the unexpected ways God works.

First, the shepherds remind us that God often chooses the unlikely and the overlooked. In first-century Jewish society, shepherds were considered among the lowest social classes – individuals often viewed as untrustworthy and ceremonially unclean. Yet, God chose them as the first human witnesses to the most significant birth in history. This speaks volumes about God’s heart: He doesn’t prioritize social status, education, or reputation. Rather, He values humble, open hearts ready to receive His message.

shepherdsSecondly, we can be inspired by the shepherds’ response to hearing the good news that Jesus was born. When the angels appeared, the shepherds didn’t hesitate or debate. In Luke 2:15, it says that they said,  “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” Their reaction was one of swift obedience and curiosity. They dropped everything – their livelihood, their responsibilities, their routine – to investigate this miraculous announcement. In a world that often prioritizes productivity and personal agenda, the shepherds teach us about radical responsiveness to God’s call in our lives.

In addition, the shepherd’s response also teaches us about worship. When they came upon Jesus, they glorified and praised God. Their worship was immediate, genuine, and unrestrained. They didn’t worry about looking sophisticated or performing a perfect religious ritual. Their hearts were simply overwhelmed with joy and wonder as they praised God.

Finally, after seeing Jesus, they became the first evangelists. The Bible says they “spread the word” about what they had seen and heard. These marginalized men and social outcasts became powerful messengers of hope, sharing the most important news in human history. Their testimony wasn’t complicated or theological – it was simple, personal, and authentic. They simply shared what they had directly experienced to all others.

Challenge

The angel’s message to the shepherds was clear: “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all people” (Luke 2:10). It is good news of great joy for ALL people, not just some. Or not just the elite or the religious insiders. It’s a message of hope for everyone. This Christmas, we can learn from these unlikely heroes in many ways. Follow their example so that everyone can hear the hope and good news of Jesus this Christmas.
