What Jonathan Teaches Us About Faithful, Selfless Faith
May 18, 2026
Most people know David slew Goliath. Far fewer know that one of the greatest examples of faith in the entire Old Testament belongs not to David but to his best friend — a prince who gave up everything and asked for nothing in return.
Jonathan, son of Saul, deserves far more attention than he gets.
He was Saul’s son — the crown prince of Israel, first in line for the throne by every human right and cultural expectation. He was also a warrior of extraordinary courage. Long before David arrived on the scene, Jonathan and his armor-bearer attacked an entire Philistine garrison by themselves. His reasoning was one of the most faith-filled statements in Scripture: “Nothing can keep the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6, CSB). He did not wait for favorable odds. He stepped forward because he knew who God was.
Then David arrived — and Jonathan did something almost incomprehensible. He recognized God’s hand on David, entered into covenant friendship with him, and voluntarily transferred his own royal identity. “Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as he loved himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his military tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt” (1 Samuel 18:3-4, CSB). He gave David the future that should have been his — freely and joyfully.
When David was being hunted by Saul, Jonathan found him in the wilderness and “strengthened his hand in God” (1 Samuel 23:16, CSB). He reminded David of what God had promised when David had nearly forgotten.
Application
Three things stand out for our faith today.
- Jonathan teaches us that real courage acts on what it believes about God — not on what the circumstances suggest.
- He teaches us that genuine love puts others ahead of personal ambition — without resentment or regret.
- He teaches us that the ministry of showing up and strengthening someone’s faith in their darkest moment is one of the most important things any believer can do.
You may never be the most prominent person in the room. Jonathan never was either. But a faith like his — courageous, selfless, and others-focused — changes every life it touches.
