How the Greatest Commandment Makes You an Everyday Missionary
May 11, 2026
Most people think of missionaries as people who pack up everything they own, board a plane, and move to a foreign country to share the gospel. And while that calling is real and beautiful, Jesus had something far more expansive in mind when He defined what the entire life of faith is built on.
A religious expert once approached Jesus with a test question — which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus answered without hesitation:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.” (Matthew 22:37-40, CSB)
Everything. The entire weight of God’s law and the entire message of the prophets hangs on two words — love God, love people. And when you begin to live that out with intention, you become a missionary without ever buying a plane ticket.
Be An Everyday Missionary
Here is what everyday missionary life looks like rooted in the greatest commandment.
Loving God with everything reorients your whole life. When your heart, soul, and mind are genuinely oriented toward God — through daily prayer, Scripture, and worship — the way you treat people around you changes naturally. You begin to see your neighbors, coworkers, and family members the way God sees them — as people He deeply loves and is actively pursuing. Love for God is always the fuel for love for people.
Loving your neighbor is the mission field in your zip code. Your neighborhood, your workplace, your child’s school, your gym — these are your mission field. The person sitting in the next cubicle, the exhausted mom at the school pickup line, the lonely elderly neighbor down the street — these are your neighbors. Loving them with consistency, generosity, and genuine interest in their lives is one of the most powerful forms of gospel witness available.
You don’t need a title to be a missionary. You need the two commandments Jesus gave and the daily willingness to live them out wherever you already are.
Application
The greatest commandment is not just a theological statement. It is a daily assignment — love God with everything, then take that love into every ordinary moment of your ordinary life and let it spill onto every person you meet.
