Isaiah 8:21-22 ESV – Distressed and hungry,… they will become enraged and… will curse their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

Understanding Happiness

4 kinds of people in the world

1) Happiness is natural— everyone should be happy.

2) Happiness is unachievable

3) People who aren’t sure if happiness is natural or unachievable

4) People who understand Biblical happiness.

Happiness is fundamental to our relationship with God, not superficial

What is joy?

Happiness is inner confidence because you are content in God.

Philippians 4:12-13 NIV – I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

John 16:22 ESV – Jesus said, So also you have sorrow now, but will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

Romans 7:15 ESV – For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

Romans 7:18 ESV – For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

Romans 7:24 ESV – Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

Romans 7:25 ESV – Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! 

Isaiah 43:25 ESV – I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.

What Blocks Happiness? The Threat of Death

John 11:25 “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me,  though he die, yet shall he live.”

1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV – 56The sting of death is sin,… 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV – So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,…. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

What Blocks Happiness? Meaninglessness
