1. Contrast that with David’s words in Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
  2. It’s like we’re all infected with some kind of spiritual toxin that makes us all want just a little more… a little better.
  3. To get us started today, would you chew on this wisdom from the Bible?

Luke 3:14c ESV – be content with your wages.

Philippians 4:12 CSB – In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need.

Proverbs 5:18-19 ESV – rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.

1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV – But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, andwe can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

Hebrews 13:5 ESV – Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

I. Help me understand the difference between healthy discontent and unhealthy discontent.

Selfish Motives

Unrealistic Expectations

II. Wisdom for Overcoming Discontent

      1. Take Discontentment seriously.
      2. Set Reasonable Expectations
      3. Be Generous (greedy people are never content) (“More” is never enough)
      4. Set Priorities/Limits
      5. Develop a Thankful Spirit (learn to be thankful instead of)
      6. Overcome fear (sometimes, fear makes us discontent…)
      7. Pursue God’s Calling
      8. Trust God’s Promises

Philippians 4:19 ESV – And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

      1. Focus on Eternal Things

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV – So we do not lose heart. Though our outer selfis wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Why is there so much discontentment?

1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV – But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, andwe can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
