Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
He made us, and we are his—
his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Psalm 139 CSB –

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

  • The Good Shepherd Knows You are Vulnerable (John 10:12-13)

John 10:12-13 CSB – The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. 13 This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.

Psalm 103:14 CSB – For he knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust.

John 10:27 CSB –  My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me

The Good Shepherd Leads His Sheep

  • Where Does the Good Shepherd Lead?

Psalm 23 (NKJV)

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;

Matthew 11:28-29 CSB – “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Psalm 23:3b – 6 CSB –
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

Matthew 9:36-38 CSB- Jesus moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”

  • How Does the Good Shepherd Lead?

John 10:27, Jesus says, My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me

1) Love Jesus’ voice

1 John 2:15-17 CSB – Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.

Romans 12:2 CSB – Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

2) Read the Bible

  • So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ–Romans 10:17
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB – All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
  • Psalm 119:9-11 CSB

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping your word.

I have sought you with all my heart;
don’t let me wander from your commands.
11 I have treasured your word in my heart
so that I may not sin against you.

  • Psalm 119:105 CSB – Your word is a lamp for my feet
    and a light on my path.

3) Educates your conscience

John 1:9 CSB – “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.”

  • Healthy Conscience
  • Numb Conscience

1 Timothy 4:2,… liars whose consciences are seared.

  • Ignorant Conscience

Isaiah 5:19-23 CSB – the prophet,

Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,

who substitute darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who substitute bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
21 Woe to those who consider themselves wise
and judge themselves clever.
22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,
who are champions at pouring beer,
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe
and deprive the innocent of justice.

  • Renewed Conscience

Hebrews 9:14 says, the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, [to] cleanse ourconsciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God

Psalm 51:10 CSB – God, create a clean heart for me
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

4) Obey the Good Shepherd’s voice

John 10:27, My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.

The Good Shepherd Guarantees Victory—at His cost

John 10:10-11 CSB – A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Romans 5:5 says, This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts

You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.

Psalm 23:6 CSB – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

Romans 8:31-32 CSB – If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
