Jonah’s Prayer of Confession

Jonah 1:1, 2 ESV – Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me.”

Psalm 34:18 NIV – The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

The word “Distress” = “Tsarah”(missarah)

“Sheol” = “Grave”or realm of the dead, place of terror

Ephesians 2:4-6 ESV – But God, being rich in mercy, because of the greave love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

Jonah’s Prayer of Praise

Jonah 2:3-6 ESV – For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever…

Jonah 2:6 ESV – …yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.

Psalm 3:3 ESV – But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

Jonah 2:7 ESV – When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.

Psalm 37:25 ESV – I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken.

Jonah 2:8-9 ESV – Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!

The Idol of Prejudice

The Idol of Self
